How do different types of courses affect your GPA?

Advanced courses like Honors, AP, IB, etc., are more challenging than regular ones. Therefore, both schools and colleges assign them higher importance when calculating GPAs. For example, a B+ from an AP course is not equivalent to a B+ from a regular course. Most commonly, an Honors course will earn you an extra half grading point (0.5) on a 4.0 scale, and an AP course an extra whole point (1.0), when compared to a regular course.
